Deep into the mountain range of Oaxaca the NGOs Fundación Justicia y Amor and Centro Operacional para el Fortalecimiento de Incitiativas Sociales (Copefis) run a housing project on the premises of the inhabitants, belonging to the indigenous group Zapotecas.

With its 18 million inhabitants, Mexico City is one of the biggest cities in the world. Parallel with the industrialization beginning in the 30s, the population growth increased, and has continued expanding the city borders since. However, the migration within the city has also influenced the urban sprawl.

Mexico City er en av verdens største byer, så en jobb i en NGO (non-governmental organisation) gir mulighet til å forstå mer enn det man kan se med øynene. Når man reiser med buss gjennom boligområdene utenfor byens historiske sentrum ser man noe av mangfoldet og kontrastene i denne tett befolkede byen. Man ser de såkalte "gated communities" som består av hele nabolag innenfor lukkede porter under streng overvåkning, og ikke langt unna ligger lavinntekts boligområder hvor de som kalles los pueblos (de folkelige klasser) bor. De sosiale forskjellene er enorme, men ofte er de geografiske avstandene små.

As Mexico City is one of the worlds biggest city working in a NGO (non-governmental organization) gives the opportunity to understand more than what is only visible through the eyes. Travelling by bus in the residential areas outside the city's historical centre is a way to experience some of the diversity and contrasts of this densely populated city. There are gated communities consisting of whole neighbourhoods under strict surveillance, and not far away there are low-income neighbourhoods where the so-called popular classes live. Even though the social distances are enormous, very often the geographical are not.

We also think in this project as a relevant use of the collective public space where Oslo inhabitants have access; not only people who lives in the building of this area, everybody can assist and have access to the area.

The urban sprawl of Mexico City is not only the result of unregulated establishment of new settlements. The second largest housing development company in Mexico, Urbi, aims to create a whole new town on the outskirts of the urban zone.
